      in 2009's nurture shock, authors po bronson and ashley merryman took a hard look at what science has to say about parenting. turns out, many of today's child-rearing strategies are backfiring (kids who are never spanked arent better off than kids who are, praise can do more harm than good). In their new book, top dog; the science of winning and losing, the pair again pores over research and talks to leading scientists- this time to learn about competition

how did you get interspeed incompetition?

In future shock we wrote about the tricky issue of praise and rewards, and we talked to so many parents who wanted to give trophies to everyone. people where proud that they didnt keep score at kids "soccer game. but we knew that the kids keep score

what did you discover in your research on teams?

bronson: there this eroneous notion that we are team players, mean we will work even harder for the team than we would for ourself. but in real life we belong to five or six different teams, none of which provide this deep sence of belong. you are on the marketing team and i am on the product team and we are also on the quality team.

and there is another problem. there is this concept that in teams as need to have good relationship between members in order to be high - perform. but a team that is all chummy, with no discord, is often like a couple that is bury something and not talking about it. Teams are going to be challenge and they have to perform - and that sometimes requirts yell at teammates or do something that pisses people off.
